Audio Growing number of world conflicts and threat strengthenRussia-China ties.m4a/2023-12-01
The Russian president says that the growing number of world conflicts and threats have strengthened ties between Moscow and Beijing. Mr. Putin says that he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping for three hours holding wide ranging discussions on bilateral issues as well as Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East. He expressed optimism in the prospects for Russia's relations with China. Dasha Chonishova joins us live now, she's in Moscow. Dasha, how successful is this trip by Mr. Putin to China? It's just his second one abroad since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, what Mr. Putin had termed his special operation. Well, in Russia the trip is seen as a success. It is reaffirming the no-limits partnership that has been declared between Moscow and Beijing. The Russian president there has spent three hours in the negotiations with his Chinese counterpart, of them about two hours in the one-on-one discussions, drinking tea and calling Xi Jinping his dear friend. So we understand that the two countries have indeed reaffirmed their no-limits partnership, said that they are going to tighten and beef up cooperation against the backdrop of the changing geopolitical situation. The Russian president was also saying that the two countries are forced to work together, coordinate their activities on the international arena because of what is happening. We also understand that there are many issues which are related to the trade and that's why we understand that the prime minister of these two countries will be meeting in Bishkek in the coming time to sign a roadmap for the bilateral cooperation that will be outlining the priorities by 2030. So we also have heard the Russian president saying very clearly that the wide range of issues has been discussed between him and the Chinese president, with Xi Jinping also saying that he was supporting the Russian people in their strive for the national security and defense of the national sovereignty. Dasha, Mr. Putin was also seen accompanied by officers who were carrying the so-called nuclear briefcase. It's a rare public sighting of this device that can be used to order a nuclear strike by the president. What can we read into this sighting of this briefcase? Well, obviously something that deserves attention, but there's been no confirmation of whether these are those very suitcases. What we understand is important here is the backdrop against which this is happening. Just days ago the Russian president was talking about the need to directify the comprehensive nuclear Tasman Treaty, CTBT, and the Russian Stadium has passed this legislation that suggests that Moscow should de-ratify this treaty in its three readings. So it's now about to go to the upper house of the Russian Parliament and then to be signed by the Russian president, which Moscow says is a move to send a signal to the United States, which never ratified this treaty, suggesting that there has to be the legislative parity and no double standards when it comes to the international arena. At the same time, Moscow is saying very clearly it is not going to resume nuclear tests in Moscow because they're responsible for nuclear power. It is not going to use that, the stamp of weapons, unless the Russian military doctrine is being involved here. So there are only two cases and none of those have so far been even close to being implemented. So the Russian Federation is saying very clearly that it understands the consequences. At the same time, what we have heard from the Russian president was that there will be the permanent patrols of the neutral waters of the Black Sea with the Russian MiG jets that will be using Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, which are said to be one of the most powerful weapons of Russia. All that is happening, Moscow says, against the backdrop of the growing tensions between Moscow and the West, where Moscow says the Western countries are trying to get closer to the Russian borders and to inflict the strategic defeat against the Russian Federation. Dasha, thank you for that. Dasha, turn the show over there in Moscow.
The Contributions and Life of Anna Blackburne, English Botanist
This narrative introduces Anna Blackburne, an English botanist of the 18th century, whose passion for natural history manifested in an expansive personal museum and a significant correspondence network with renowned naturalists of her time. Born into a family with a keen interest in botany, she utilized her resources, including her father's vast library, to educate herself in the sciences, even mastering Latin to better access premiere scientific texts. Her botanical pursuits didn't stop at theoretical studies; she engaged actively in collecting a variety of specimens ranging from insects to birds. With her home serving both as a base for her explorations and a welcoming space for intellectual exchanges, she fostered a particular relationship with Johann Reinhold Forster, a naturalist who provided her with guidance in entomology. Moreover, Blackburne's contribution to the scientific community extended beyond her collections; she actively corresponded with Linnaeus and contributed specimens that supported the works of others, like Thomas Pennant. Her legacy, enshrined in both her museum and the species named in her honor, reflects a life dedicated to the advancement of natural sciences.
